Ilute Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, Sesheke District, Western Province Zambia

Ilute Solar Limited, with the support of the African Development Bank, initiated the 32 Megawatt-peak Ilute Solar PV Project with an amount of Thirty Five (35) Million United States Dollars or Nine Hundred and Twenty Five Million Zambian Kwacha for a period of 25 years. The project will be implemented in the following areas/localities: Katima Ward, Sesheke District, Western Province, Zambia. 

Summary description of the Project

  • The objectives of the Project are to provide a clean, renewable source of energy whilst creating new job opportunities for local people and providing the local communities with financial support during the life of the Project. The key objective of the Project is to generate sustainable energy and achieve climate resilience while contributing to National Development.

  • Ilute Solar Limited, is proposing to develop a 32 Megawatt-peak (MWp) / 25MWac Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Project, 15km north-west of Sesheke town on the western side of the Zambezi River in Sesheke District, Western Province, Zambia. the Project Will consist of:

    • A Solar PV site (Solar PV Panels, internal roads, office, transprimers, inverters, electrical connections  and related aspects  covering 60 hectares within a 250 hectare area owned by Ilute); and

    • 6,5km, 66Kv powerline from the Solar PV Site to the existing Sesheke Substation.

Compliance with environmental and social safeguards provisions and procedures

In accordance with the requirements of national legislation on environmental and social safeguards, and the requirements of the Integrated Safeguards System and Operational Safeguards (OS) and the Borrower Environmental and Social Guidance Notes of the African Development Bank (AfDB), the following mandatory environmental and social management documents have been prepared: (i) One environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA); One abbreviated resettlement plan for affected populations (ARAP); (iii) a stakeholder engagement plan (SEP); and (iv) One Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP).

In compliance with national legislation on environmental and social assessments, and the E&S requirements of the African Development Bank (AfDB) mentioned above, the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) has approved the said documents as well as the management measures proposed therein. The Environmental Compliance Certificate/Environmental Permit no. ZEMA/EA/EIS/LST/EAC16/1of  5 February 2024 was issued for this purpose.
